Nevada County has four principal government entities providing public services to the community. The cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City and the Town of Truckee are the governing bodies and service providers for most public activities within their boundaries. The County of Nevada is the governing body and service provider for all areas not within the incorporated cities of Grass Valley, Nevada City and Town of Truckee. In addition, the county provides some services like health, welfare and libraries to all residents, even those who live within incorporated districts.
The Nevada County Board of Supervisors is made up of five members representing five geographic districts within the county. They are selected by non-partisan election to serve four-year terms. Utility districts such as water, sewer, gas and electric vary depending on the location of the residence. Fire districts may also operate independently of municipal government.

Grass Valley, Nevada City and the Town of Truckee are Charter cities and operate with a Mayor / Council / Administrator form of government. Each council is comprised of five members elected at large on a non-partisan basis for a four-year term.
